  3. Should New York ban Coke? Using food stamps to buy sodas, teas, sports drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages would not be allowed in New York City under a new government effort to battle obesity.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson announced Thursday that they are seeking permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the nation's food stamp program, to add sugary drinks to the list of prohibited goods for city residents receiving assistance.

If approved, it would be the first time an item would be banned from the federal program based solely on nutritional value.

The idea has been suggested before, including in 2008 in Maine, where it drew criticism from advocates for the poor who argued it unfairly singled out low-income people and risked scaring off potential needy recipients.
ng approved than the "skimpy" 2004 Minnesota program because it focuses only on beverages.

The food stamp system, launched in the 1960s, serves some 40 million Americans per month and does not currently restrict any food item based on nutrition.

  4. San Francisco bans Happy Meals San Francisco lawmakers have given preliminary approval to a law that would prohibit fast-food restaurants from putting toys in children's meals unless they include fruits and vegetables and don't have too many unhealthy calories.
A committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 Monday to pass the proposed ordinance on to the full board. Santa Clara County supervisors adopted a similar law in April that banned all fast-food freebies.

Several doctors testified in favor of the San Francisco law. One recalled seeing children in hospital waiting rooms carrying McDonald's Happy Meals.
